SVACWorking artists in the Verde Valley will be opening their private studios to the public at the end of April for the Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition’s (SVAC) 13th annual Open Studios Tour. This non-profit, artist-run event provides thousands of visitors a unique opportunity to meet the artists and gain a first-hand view of their creative processes. The weekend event is a free, self-guided tour allowing visitors the opportunity to meet and talk with artists in their daily work spaces. The Umbrella Project at Hillside Sedona

logo_umbreallaproject2Hillside Sedona, located at 671 State Route 179, Sedona, AZ is once again the site to display this year’s Umbrella Project Charity Event. Hillside Sedona will be home to over 200 beautifully hand painted umbrellas that will be on display. The umbrellas were painted by students across the country, Arizona and Havasupai Elementary students. The artistic umbrellas are available for a recommended donation of $50. HOME_653Bird enthusiasts can join a naturalist for a “Guided Bird Walk”. Beginning as well as advanced birders are welcome. Rangers recommend that visitors bring their own binoculars. A limited number are available for loan from the Park. No matter the time of day, visitors can check out the many birds who make Red Rock State Park their home. The bird-feeding area behind the visitor center, on the Hummingbird Patio, is an excellent spot to start your tour or to take pictures. If you are going to be vising Sedona, Arizona this week, don’t miss you chance to hike the red rocks during the full moon! That’s right, Red Rock State Park in Sedona, AZ is ready to take you out to enjoy the night time splendor of the red rocks with a Guided Moonlight Hike on April 21st!  Sedona during the day is beautiful, Sedona by moonlight is Awesome!

This 2 1/2 hour naturalist-led interpretive moonlight hike is by far the most popular hike offered by Red Rock State Park ( make your reservations for this hike as soon as possible). Enjoy the cooler temperatures of evening as you enjoy the sunset and moon rise from an overlook and return by the light of the moon. You will also have the chance to learn a great deal about Sedona and its surrounding areas. Information about Verde Valley and park history, as well as archeology, geology, botany, and the riparian wildlife area is offered.

When we tell you that this is one of the most popular guided Sedona hikes, we are not kidding. Space is limited and reservations prior to this event are required; call (928) 282- 6907 to reserve your space as soon as possible. A $5.00 reservation fee is required as well as an entry fees upon arrival: 7.00 per adult (14 and up) $4.00 per youth (7-13), and free for children (0-6)).

Rangers ask hikers to please arrive approximately 30 minutes before the starting time to insure participation. Program fees are nonrefundable unless the park must cancel the hike after your arrival. Wear suitable clothing and shoes (prepare for cool nights) and bring water, a flashlight and insect spray. Piano on the RocksThis first Piano on the Rocks International Festival, “From Paris to Sedona”, celebrates great music by French composers and composers who lived in Paris. Piano on the Rocks will present masterpieces by Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, Chopin, Liszt, Thalberg and others. The Festival will open at the Church of the Red Rocks under a beautiful sunset. The subsequent two concerts will be held at the Sedona Creative Life Center. These three concerts will feature international pianists: Sandrine Erdely-Sayo, and Helene Tysman, laureate of the Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition. RERO_ArchHikeRed Rock State Park has been a destination for Native Americans for several millennia. Most of the ancient features found in the park are from the Sinagua culture dating about 1100 to 1425 AD. Come and hear the fascinating story of the pre-Columbian people who lived and traveled in the park! The hike will identify the various archaeological features and interpret them into the wider context of important regional Sinagua sites. SVAC’s Open Studios Tour in Sedona, AZ

Make your plans today to visit the artists in Sedona, AZ during the SVAC’s Open Studios Tour taking place the last weekend of April! There will be over 40 studios participating, working in a variety of mediums, such as: ceramics, painting, fiber, photography, jewelry, watercolors, and sculpture.

This free, self-guided event is an annual celebration of the arts and artists in the greater Verde Valley. This non-profit, artist-run event provides thousands of visitors a unique opportunity to meet the artists and gain a first-hand view of their creative processes. The event is funded entirely by artist participation fees and community support. The weekend event is a free, self-guided tour allowing visitors the opportunity to meet and talk with artists in their daily work spaces. “History of the Soldier” at Fort Verde

FOVE_HistoryoftheSoldierFort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde will honor Veterans at its annual “History of the Soldier”! Through living history interpretation, the Park will honor the dedication, commitment and sacrifice military men and women from around the globe in the Armed Forces of all eras. Veterans from around the state are encouraged to attend. Activities will include flag raising ceremonies and special memorial services as well as the drill calls, colors and retreat, the firing of the cannon and Gatling gun, and military tactics and demonstrations, all performed as part of the event. Youths aged 7 to 13 years of age are charged $4 per person. There is no charge for children 6 years of age or younger.

Slam poetry is an art form that allows written page poets to share their work alongside theatrical performers, hip-hop artists and lyricists. While many people may think of poetry as dull and laborious, a poetry slam is like a series of high-energy, three-minute one-person plays. All types of poetry are welcome on the stage, from street-wise hip-hop and narrative performance poems, to political rants and introspective confessionals. Any poem is a “slam” poem if performed in a competition. All poets get three minutes per round to entertain and inspire the audience with their creativity. Starting with a presentation at 7:00 pm on current sky events and what’s “up” in the spring skies. Then star viewing from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The galaxies of Virgo, Coma Berenices and Leo will be high in the sky. Ursa Major, the Big Dipper will be high in the sky as well offering galaxies, double stars and planetary nebulae. Jupiter and its Galilean Moons will be the planet of the spring constellations just below the galaxies of Leo the Lion. There will be a “Star Jar” craft project available for children during the presentation as well as space cookies, moon juice, and other complementary beverages. Attendance is limited and a $5.00 reservation fee per person prior to the event is required. Red Rock State ParkJoin Red Rock State Park’s knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on their trails and discuss how Sedona transformed into what we see today. Red Rock State Park is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind the picturesque features of Sedona. This is an interpretive experience for both the beginner and experienced hiker, lasting between 2-2 ½ hours and an elevation gain of 250 feet. Please bring water and wear suitable footwear.
