Out of Africa Wildlife Park
If you have ever visited Sedona, Arizona and the Verde Valley you know all about the wonderful wildlife and caretakers at Out of Africa Wildlife Park located in nearby Camp Verde. This park has become a main attraction to people visiting the area. As for the locals, well we go there often throughout the year! We go for the excitement that fills the air when the strength, dexterity and cleverness of the Tigers are on display at Tiger Splash, some people (me included) face their fears and hold a python in the Giant Snake Show, smiles cross the faces of all when Pilgrim or Kibo (Giraffes) visit to say hello and get some treats during the African Bush Safari Tour, be warned if they are in the mood you might get a big giraffe kiss. Make no mistake, this place IS special. It is not a zoo! Out of Africa Wildlife Park is a place like no other, were you can see hundreds of animals from all over the world in their natural habitat along with wonderful and exciting educational attractions that get you up close and learning about the wonderful animals that live there. The caretakers do not train the wildlife, or try to change their behavior in any way. They are well known for their commitment to their wildlife and serve as a safe haven for many of the animals they have rescued over the years. “Loving Bowls” in Sedona, AZ

Sedona Arts Center – Loving Bowls

loving-bowls

December 9th, 2017

There is something about a handcrafted bowl filled with chili that really puts me in the mood for the winter holidays. A bowl that represents art, love, warmth, gratitude and giving. A bowl that is so much more than what it appears. But where, where could I get such a bowl? Are you asking the same question? Well, I have the answer for you!

Every year since I have lived in the Verde Valley the Sedona Arts Center presents a community fundraiser called “Loving Bowls” in December. The event offers a large selection of over 1000 bowls created by local volunteer potters who have created bowls with a variety of glazes and artistic flare! These bowls can be purchased for only $10 each, and they come with chili, bread and yes dessert of course! So basically you get a very cool bowl, a meal and you get to do some good! This year, the event’s proceeds will go to the Sedona Food Bank, Sedona Community Center, Humane Society of Sedona and the arts and educational programs at Sedona Arts Center.

There will also be a wonderful collection of 50 handmade glass bowls, courtesy of their partner The Melting Point featured along with 200 pet bowls in support of the Humane Society of Sedona!

Loving Bowls will be taking place this Saturday, December the 9th from 12:00 om – 3:00 pm at the historic Art Barn. The Sedona Arts Center and Ceramics Studio is located at the corner of State Route 89A and Art Barn Road at the north end of Uptown Sedona – on the right just before you enter Oak Creek Canyon. For more information on this Sedona event please visit the Sedona Arts Center website or the Sedona Arts Center on Facebook.

The Nutcracker in Sedona, AZ

The Nutcracker in Sedona, Arizona

December 2nd – 3rd, 2017

The Nutcracker is one of the most famous ballets the world has even known, and a treasured holiday tradition for many families, including my own. As a little girl the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” was my all time favorite, to this day I can still hear Tchaikovsky’s score playing in my head any day during the holiday season. Of course my brothers being brothers preferred the Entrance of the Mouse King. For as long as I can remember, The Nutcracker has been my favorite part of Christmas, and hopefully will become one of yours if it is not already!

If you are going to be in Sedona, Arizona the first weekend of December, you will have a chance to treat your family to The Nutcracker and create a memory for your children that will last a lifetime. The Phoenix Ballet and Artistic Director Slawomir Wozniak present The Nutcracker at The Sedona Performing Arts Center on December the 2nd and 3rd, 2017! Slawomir Wozniak has breathed new life into the Nutcracker choreography, and is excited to share this masterpiece that exudes the most beautiful and perfect choreography. The great thing about The Nutcracker is that it transcends generations.

The magical story of The Nutcracker follows Clara and her Prince as they share the story of a magical gift, a suspenseful battle between soldiers and mice, and take us to the enchanted Land of Sweets. Dozens of students from Sedona will join Company members on-stage, dressed in intricately designed costumes and surrounded by larger than life sets, creating a magnificent sensory feast.

Winifred Muench, Chair, Sedona Chamber Ballet says, “Do not miss the opportunity to  see the award winning and nationally renowned dancers perform this timeless classic. A professional production not to be missed.”

There are two performances scheduled for Saturday, one at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm and on Sunday catch the matinee performance at 2:00 pm! Tickets: Gold $30 for an adult, $18 for a child, Platinum $45 for an adult, $25 for a child. For more information or to purchase tickets to this Sedona event please visit www.sedonachamberballet.org.

Winter in Sedona, AZ

Winter Fun in Sedona, Arizona!

December 2017 – February 2018

We have many guests who love to visit us in Sedona, Arizona in the winter months, especially over the holidays. Sedona is less crowded, hotel rates are lower, and if you are lucky Sedona will get a little snow during your visit and transform the red rocks into a winter wonderland! Snow is not a common occurrence, some years we have very little, others we have enough to frost the red rocks like a layer cake! Because we have a lot of afternoon sun, the snow usually melts quickly, but while it is here it is downright breathtaking! With all that said, if you are considering visiting us during the winter months we have highlighted some of the fun things to do like hiking and photography and some of the most anticipated winter events below from December until February including holiday events, family fun, and popular events for the beginning of 2018 such as the Sedona Marathon, Chocolate Lovers’ Valentine’s Celebration, Sedona International Film Festival and more!

We hope all of this information helps you plan some winter fun in Sedona, to see even more events please visit our Sedona events page. If you would like to stay at our Sedona hotel during the winter months make sure to check out our Sedona Hotel Specials page, there a few lodging deals you may like to take advantage of. If you would like to learn more about our Sedona hotel please visit the Best Western Plus Inn of Sedona.

Fun Things to Do

Hiking Sedona in the Winter Months
During the winter months Sedona’s early morning and night time weather definitely carry a chill! There are some mornings we can be in the low 30’s with afternoon temps between 50 and 60. Heck, I remember one day wearing shorts in Sedona right around Christmas! The afternoon temperatures are ideal for those of us who love to hike the red rocks. One of the hikes our guests and staff like to take in the winter time is Bell Rock Pathway. One of our frequent winter guest loves to head out to the trail around 9:00 am carrying a thermos of hot tea with her for morning and water for afternoon. As long as the sun visits us during the day the trail heats up nicely.

We can’t guarantee you will get all sunny afternoons but we have more sun than snow, that’s for sure!

  • Make sure to dress in layers, make sure to take along water, energizing snack, cell phone, extra socks, wear hiking boots for a better grip.
  • If you are hiking alone, please let someone know where you will be hiking. You can always stop by the front desk and let us know you will be hiking alone and where you are going to hike. It is always smart to take the phone number of the hotel you are staying at in case you need to reach them.
  • Time you hike appropriately, once the sun starts going down it is cold!

• • • • •

Photography Day
Sedona is beautiful to photo in the winter whether you are catching snow clouds moving in over the red rocks, a dusting of snow or a clear crisp winter day! If you love to snap photos we highly suggest picking a day centered on taking snaps of your favorite scenes. Some of our favorite place to shoot from are the Sedona airport, our hotels terraced balconies (You can get some really good shots from here, including Coffee Pot rock), Bell Rock Pathway and if it snows the chapel and the sculptures at Tlaquepaque make for a unique and artistic showcase of photos.

• • • • •

Enjoy some Entertainment
On those cold days when it may be to chilly to hike or snap some photos look into enjoying some entertainment. The Mary D. Fisher Theatre features some great independent films you may not get the chance to see in your home town. You can also find live entertainment most nights at Olde Sedona Bar and Grill and Sound Bites Grill!
