We have many guests who love to visit us in Sedona, Arizona in the winter months, especially over the holidays. Sedona is less crowded, hotel rates are lower, and if you are lucky Sedona will get a little snow during your visit and transform the red rocks into a winter wonderland! Snow is not a common occurrence, some years we have very little, others we have enough to frost the red rocks like a layer cake! Because we have a lot of afternoon sun, the snow usually melts quickly, but while it is here it is downright breathtaking! With all that said, if you are considering visiting us during the winter months we have highlighted some of the fun things to do like hiking and photography and some of the most anticipated winter events below from December until February including holiday events, family fun, and popular events for the beginning of 2015 such as Sedona World Wisdom Days, Sedona Marathon, Sedona Yoga Festival, Sedona International Film Festival and more!

Fun Things to Do

Hiking Sedona in the Winter Months
Bell Rock pathway 3 2014 Winter Guide to Fun Things to Do in Sedona, ArizonaDuring the winter months Sedona’s early morning and night time weather definitely carry a chill! There are some mornings we can be in the low 30′s with afternoon temps between 50 and 60. Heck, I remember one day wearing shorts in Sedona right around Christmas! The afternoon temperatures are ideal for those of us who love to hike the red rocks. One of the hikes our guests and staff like to take in the winter time is Bell Rock Pathway. One of our frequent winter guest loves to head out to the trail around 9:00 am carrying a thermos of hot tea with her for morning and water for afternoon. As long as the sun visits us during the day the trail heats up nicely. We can’t guarantee you will get all sunny afternoons but we have more sun than snow, that’s for sure! We do have some tips if you are going to hike this winter

  • Make sure to dress in layers, make sure to take along water, energizing snack, cell phone, extra socks, wear hiking boots for a better grip.
  • If you are hiking alone, please let someone know where you will be hiking. You can always stop by the front desk and let us know you will be hiking alone and where you are going to hike. It is always smart to take the phone number of the hotel you are staying at in case you need to reach them.
  • Time you hike appropriately, once the sun starts going down it is cold!

Photography Day
winter melt 2014 Winter Guide to Fun Things to Do in Sedona, ArizonaSedona is beautiful to photo in the winter whether you are catching snow clouds moving in over the red rocks, a dusting of snow or a clear crisp winter day! If you love to snap photos we highly suggest picking a day centered on taking snaps of your favorite scenes. Some of our favorite place to shoot from are the Sedona airport, our hotels terraced balconies (You can get some really good shots from here, including Coffee Pot rock), Bell Rock Pathway and if it snows the chapel and the sculptures at Tlaquepaque make for a unique and artistic showcase of photos.

Enjoy some Entertainment
On those cold days when it may be to chilly to hike or snap some photos look into enjoying some entertainment. The Mary D. Fisher Theatre features some great independent films you may not get the chance to see in your home town. You can also find live entertainment most nights at Olde Sedona Bar and Grill and Sound Bites Grill!

Live Comedy Show this Weekend in Sedona, AZ

Zenprov Comedy is Back! Live in Sedona this Weekend!

Saturday, November 22nd, 2014

ThanksGiggling teaser Live Comedy Show this Weekend in Sedona, AZAre you ready for some laughs, giggles and fun in the red rocks of Sedona? After a five-month break, Zenprov Comedy is back with their final show of 2014 titled “Happy ThanksGiggling!” Enjoy a feast of funny starting at 7:30 pm on Saturday, November 22nd at the Mary D Fisher Theater.

“Zenprov is the best comedy troupe in Arizona! “At their last show, people were laughing so hard their cheeks were hurting.” - Patrick Schweiss, Executive Director of the Sedona International Film Festival.

If you’ve never been to one of their live performances before, Zenprov Comedy is similar to the improvised TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The troupe performs fast-paced, spontaneous comedic scenes created in the moment, always based on audience suggestions. Unlike sketch or standup comedy, nothing is scripted or rehearsed ahead of time. It’s completely made up and never the same show twice. During their five-month hiatus, Zenprov has been hard at work creating new games to surprise and delight their audience. “The audience is half our show. They provide the humor, we just channel it.”

So, if you are ready to have some fun this weekend visit the Sedona International Film Festival website for more information and to purchase tickets to this Sedona event. And if you are a guest of the Best Western PLUS Inn of Sedona we will be happy to drop you off and pick you up from this night of laughter in our Complimentary “About Town” Shuttle! Starting in January 2015, Zenprov will be performing every month at the Mary D. Fisher Theater through May.

Thanksgiving with Love from Chef Christopher Dobrowolski

Ho Ho… Hold on a Minute! We Skipped Turkey Day

By Chef Christopher Dobrowolski

Christopher Dobrowolski Thanksgiving with Love from Chef Christopher DobrowolskiHello there people, let’s get down to serious Thanksgiving business! I know that Turkey Day is just around the corner and I’ve been asked a thousand times what we do at our house. It’s really simple actually, free range fresh turkey from the Dakota’s. Over the years we have prepared it every way possible; grilled, smoked, roasted, fried and the most memorable I think, “in the ground”.

Here’s a little story about the “in the ground” turkey that will either have you laughing or calling me a genius, either way I’m okay with it. Here it goes.

About 13 years ago I was working out of state with the incredible Hillstone Company so I came home to visit my family for Thanksgiving. We all gathered in the Verde Valley this particular year, at my brother’s house. Everyone was excited by the aromas of stuffing and fresh turkey, then it happened……. a complete and total blackout. That meant no gas grill, no oven, nothing to cook with at all. We called and were told a minimum of 7-10 hours. Guess what, that doesn’t work out well with a house full of hungry family. So there we were with a giant raw turkey, a couple shovels and a couple cords of fresh cut mesquite. The next thing you know the birds are stuffed full of butter and fresh herbs and are hovering over a fresh bed of ash, roasting/smoking to perfection. You might ask why “in the ground”? It wasn’t because this was the best way, or even the best flavor, but because we worked together as a family to get it done, because we had earned it. That is a memory I am thankful for.

This article is hard for me because just the other day, Sunday November 9th, we celebrated an early Thanksgiving because my brother is losing his five year battle with cancer. I didn’t want us to miss the opportunity to get together one last time. Maybe it was for selfish reasons, maybe I need his approval, or maybe it was simply because we as a family are not perfect, but we always seem to figure it out. That is something to be truly thankful for, and what this holiday is all about. I realize this isn’t my usual playful attitude, but a more serious side of my personality. The one thing I want to get across is this, love yourself and be thankful for who you have, and for who has you.

Ok, back to what I’m good at, this year at Schoolhouse we are going to be serving up a classic turkey dinner but with Sous Vide turkey! Yum! Here’s a quick explanation of this method. Remember the old boil-in-bag foods? Yup, that’s the idea, but at a lower temperature for a longer amount of time in MUCH bigger bags. Of course, the bigger bags also have better stuff in them.

Here’s a recipe for a really great roasting rub. This will give your turkey great flavors, even if all of you don’t have the necessary machine in your kitchen for our “boil-in-bag” preparation. Thank you for reading and I look forward to sending you our Holiday and New Year article.

Schoolhouse Roasting Rub

  • ½ Cup Extra Virgin Olive oil
  • ¼ cup of each of the following finely chopped
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Tarragon
  • Rendered Bacon
  • Fresh Shallots
  • Fresh Garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon Sea Salt (I like Volcanic Black because it adds a ashy flavor
  • 1 Tablespoon Fresh Cracked pepper
  • 1 Cup cognac
  • Mix all together and rub the heck out of your bird. Do not forget to rub under the skin!

Love you Skip!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

A Personal Look at Out of Africa Wildlife Park

A Visit to Out of Africa Wildlife Park in Camp Verde, AZ

By: Lisa Peters

Out of Africa Wildlife Park A Personal Look at Out of Africa Wildlife ParkIt has been a while since I have been able to visit Out of Africa Wildlife Park, my favorite place in the known Universe! Work, life and weather have seemed to interfere with all of my plans for a visit this year. Last weekend I decided I had waited long enough. I had to return to see Pilgrim and give him a treat! I was more than ready to see the beautiful white tiger Chalet who always seems to be sunning and ready for photo ops, and lucky for me Chalet was the featured tiger that day in “Tiger Splash”! I mean really, could it get any better! Yes, yes it can! The new baby grizzly bear Sycamore was playful and fun to watch at the “Wonders of Wildlife” Show and I was able to meet Jericho, the very handsome white rhino!

I have come to expect wonderful experiences at the park, and I have yet to be disappointed. It seems like every time I have visited, there has always been a special experience waiting for me. I can still remember the very first time I witnessed “Tiger Splash”, the first time I came across the beloved Boom Boom, getting over my snake fear at the Giant Snake Show and my first Giraffe kiss! Now I get to add meeting Jericho to the list!

On a day that was already fantastic, I was treated to an extra surprise, Jericho! Now most of you that know me or have read anything I have ever written about Out of Africa know that I had a bond with the wonderful, remarkable, powerful rhino, Boom Boom. He was a favorite of everyone that visited the park. It was a very sad day when his spirit passed, and for me personally it was especially rough. I knew that it would be hard for me to visit the park and to see a new rhino in Boom Boom’s enclosure. Then I realized how selfish and a bit silly of me, I love all the animals at the park, even the ones that freak me out a little (like the hyenas). And I knew the White Rhino Jericho was there now. I really did want to meet him, and that I did, in a big way! I was fortunate enough to be allowed to get really close to this handsome creature, and no, he wasn’t Boom Boom, he had a personality all his own, and he too stole a little piece of my heart! Really a remarkable experience and I can’t thank the wonderful staff enough (especially Courtney and Ashton for making this encounter happen)!

So family, friends and visitors to Sedona and the Verde Valley area, this is why I go on and on about Out of Africa Wildlife Park! It is a great place for families, couples and individuals to visit. I would be very surprised if you had a bad day there. I mean, wildlife will be wildlife, there are days you visit and not all the lions, tigers and bears will choose to be seen. But for the most part you will see many of them, you will hear Lazarus roar, and see the tigers play, and Chalet will almost without a doubt be sunning and ready for you and your camera… and let’s not forget Jericho! So please, trust me on this, if you have not been yet, or it has been a while since you visited the park, GO! It is so worth it!

Lanning Gallery
Annual Michael Grant Exhibition
Lanning Gallery Kick off your Weekend in Sedona, Arizona with 1st FridayThis year Grant unveils turquoise inlay work that is truly outstanding and a new avenue for him. Grant’s inlays are, untraditionally, of a subtle sculptural texture. Each stone is the result of seven precise cuts that give a slight bevel to its edges and fit it snugly, yet with individual distinction, beautifully into place. Grant may incorporate sterling silver within the lines of his design, as in a buckle of webbed green Peacock turquoise whose large center stone is offset from the slivers of stone that create a surrounding rectangle. For more information on this Sedona event please visit the Lanning Gallery.
