September has arrived! Along with the milder temperatures and bluer skies that fall brings to the Verde Valley it also brings back the popular Geology Hike at Red Rock State Park. Add to that the Guided Moonlight Hike, bird and nature walks and a fascination discussion about the Permian Period and it is shaping up to be a great month of activity at the Park!
Red Rock State Park – Guided Moonlight Hike

The Moonlight Hike is among the most popular interpretive hikes at the Park. Led by a naturalist, it gives hikers the rare opportunity to enjoy the sunset and moon rise from an overlook and return by the light of the moon, while also having the chance to learn about Sedona and its surrounding areas.The hike lasts two to 2 1/2 hours and covers a distance of approximately two miles. Reservations are required, please call 928.282.6907 to reserve your spot. A $5.00 reservation fee is required as well as an entry fee upon arrival. Sedona Guided Geology Hike

Join Red Rock State Park’s knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on their trails and discuss how Sedona transformed into what we see today. Red Rock State Park is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind the picturesque features of Sedona. This is an interpretive experience for both the beginner and experienced hiker, lasting between 2-2 ½ hours and an elevation gain of 250 feet. Please bring water and wear suitable footwear. Guided Bird Walk
Every Wednesday and Saturday Morning (7:00 am)
Meet up with other bird lovers at the visitors center at 7:00 am and enjoy a leisurely stroll through one of the most popular parks in Northern Arizona . Daily Nature Walk
Every Day at 9:00 am
you can join a naturalist for a guided nature walk of one and a half to two hours. You will be introduced to the riparian ecosystem of Oak Creek and other aspects of the Park. Red Rock State Park – Sunday Lecture Series
As Sedona’s Red Rocks Were Being Formed: A Look at the Permian Period
September 21st, 2014 (2:00 pm)
Join Red Rock state Park in welcoming Kennard Bork. Ken is a new resident of Sedona and is an enthusiast of the rich natural history and cultural options of this area. He has long been fascinated with dinosaurs and has a Ph.D. in geology and paleontology. The world of the Permian Period (300 to 250 million years ago) would look quite alien to a modern observer. The Permian period ended with the greatest extinction event in the history of the planet.This lecture will briefly look at the Earth during that fascinating time.
