There will be events taking place all over the state during Arizona Archaeology & Heritage Awareness Month, at Arizona State Parks, National Monuments, Historical sites and Arizona Museums. The popular V Bar V Archaeology Discovery Days, Verde Valley Archaeology Fair, American Indian Art Show and Archaeology Film Festival also take place during this statewide event!

  • Living History Mountain Man Camp
    March 14th – 15th, 2015 (9:30 am – 3:00 pm)VBarV 2015 Arizona Archaeology & Heritage Awareness Month
    Visit a living history Mountain Man Camp at the V Bar V Heritage Site. Learn about the early 1800’s history of this region from the point of view of mountain men who were exploring, fur trapping and trading. See demonstrations of natural hide tanning and learn about native plants and wildlife. See and learn about petroglyphs that were made by over 700 years ago.   • V Bar V Ancient Technology Discovery Days
    March 21st – 22nd, 2015
    Demonstrations and hands on activities of Ancient Technology including making and firing pottery, throwing rabbit sticks and atl-atls, ancient technology tool demonstrations, flint knapping, making fire by friction, grinding corn on a metate, making pinch pots, and tasting traditional foods. Archaeologists will be on site. Author Ken Zoll will talk about the solar calendar spring equinox effect at the petroglyph panel from 1-2 p.m., Sat.-Sun. Enjoy watching the Yavapai Apache Nation dancers and singers and more! Bring walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, and water. Red Rock Pass or equivalent required for parking. Verde Valley Archaeology Fair  & American Indian Art Show

AFairLogo.gif 3 2015 Arizona Archaeology & Heritage Awareness MonthThe Verde Valley Archaeology Fair and International Archaeology Film Festival are held during Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month on the last weekend in March. Enjoy two exciting days of archaeological adventures, and take a trip back in time to explore the past through hands-on activities and presentations.

Experience the excitement of archaeology with dozens of hands-on activities, live presentations, and special programs. The Fair includes the annual American Indian Art Show with artists from Hopi, Navajoland, Zuni and several New Mexico pueblo communities. Artists will demonstrate their medium and have their work available for sale. The Art Show is in the Community Center with the archaeology exhibits. 

The 2015 International Archaeology Film Festival will have film showings March 27th and 28th at 7:00 pm at the Phillip England Center for the Performing Arts, 210 Camp Lincoln Road, Camp Verde. Open House: George Hance House & Camp Verde Historical Society Museum

The George Hance House is located near Fort Verde State Historic Park at 229 Coppinger Street and was built in 1916. George W. Hance arrived in the Verde Valley in 1869, and was later appointed first Postmaster of Camp Verde. The Camp Verde Historical Society Museum is located at 435 South Main Street. Blacksmiths Demonstration at Camp Verde’s 1933 Rock Jail

The blacksmith makes and repairs iron objects using a hammer, anvil, forge, tongs, and vise. For some, blacksmithing is a practical skill that allows the smith to fix things that needed to be fixed; for members of the Arizona Artist Blacksmith Association, it is an art form that has evolved through the centuries. This Demonstration will take place during the Open house at the Camp Verde Rock Jail located at 44 Hollamon Street.     Join NPS archaeologists at the Walnut Canyon Visitor Center and learn how early people in northern Arizona processed plant food using manos and metates. Make your own pinch pot, paintbrush and split-twig figurine. Learn how to throw a spear using an atlatl. Regular entrance fees apply.

The program will cover the fascinating prehistory of the people who first settled in the area over 1,500 years ago. Learn about the settlements they built, how the culture flourished, their structures, and artifacts. View breathtaking shots of Sunset Crater, the sprawling settlements of Wupatki, and amazing dwellings including Montezuma Castle, Walnut Canyon, and Tuzigoot. The ability to predict seasons was essential for Native Americans in order manage environmental changes, which was vital for survival. learn about how the early sky watchers developed systems to synchronize their calendars around celestial events. Kenneth will describe the diverse ways in which prehistoric Native American cultures integrated the stars and their annual events. For more information please visit Red Rock State Park. This event will feature demonstrations of ancient technology including Fire by Friction with Michael Campbell, Bow and Arrow fabrication with Sam Palais, and Gourd Arts with Dean Campbell. Demonstrations will be at the visitor center under a covered porch at Red Rock Ranger Station, 8375 State Route 179, one mile south of the Village of Oak Creek. Family Archeology Day-Saturday

Red Rock State Park1 2015 Arizona Archaeology & Heritage Awareness MonthLooking for something to do with the whole family that’s not just educational, but fun? Red Rock State Park’s Connections Program will be hosting a Family Archeology Program. The program will consist of two different educational activities. One activity will focus on the science of archeology with a hands on excavation experience in the park’s interpretive ‘dig site’, while the other group will hit the trails for an anthropologically focused educational hike. The Connection Program has been developed for students from first through twelfth grade in order to provide field activities in a natural environment. There is an age limit of 7 years old with an adult for this program. Please call ahead for reserve your space 928.282.6907. The program is included within the Park’s admission fees. Sedona Guided Geology Hike

Red Rock State Park 2015 March Events and Hikes at Red Rock State ParkJoin Red Rock State Park’s knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on their trails and discuss how Sedona transformed into what we see today. Red Rock State Park is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind the picturesque features of Sedona. This is an interpretive experience for both the beginner and experienced hiker, lasting between 2-2 ½ hours and an elevation gain of 250 feet. Please bring water and wear suitable footwear. Orson Sedona Film Festival   A Tribute to Orson WellesThe 21st Annual Sedona International Film Festival will celebrate the 100th birthday of film icon and former Sedona resident Orson Welles with screenings of Citizen Kane, Othello, Touch of Evil, Falstaff – Chimes at Midnight, several documentaries about his life and career along with post-film Q&As hosted by his daughter, Beatrice. There will also be a discussion about his final, unfinished film, The Other Side of the Wind! Documentaries include the controversial, The Battle Over Citizen Kane, and Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles.

Beatrice, who lives part-time in Sedona, has helped Festival organizers pull together not only the feature films to be screened but panels and speakers for each screening including critic Jeffrey Lyons, The Other Side of the Wind producer Filip Jan Rymsza, cameraman Mike Ferris, actors Pat McMahon and Peter Jason; Josh Karp, the author of the upcoming book, “Orson Wells’ Last Movie: The Making of the Other Side of the Wind;” Ray Kelly, who is the driving force behind Wellesnet, the leading online source about Welles life and career, and other special guests.

Valentine’s Day Wine & Chocolate Walk in Sedona, AZ

A fun new event is happening on Valentine’s Day in Sedona!

The Shops at Piñon Pointe will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Wine & Chocolate Walk on Saturday February 14th, from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Chocolate and wine lovers you don’t want to miss the wonderful tastings being offered!

Enjoy a delicious stroll through the plaza with select stores featuring bites of gourmet chocolates, great Valentines gift ideas, and wine tasting. Teresa Joy, daughter of world famous flamenco guitarist Esteban will be playing in the courtyard near Chicos and Esteban will be making a cameo appearance around 2:00 pm.

This is one of more fun events to come to the Shops at Piñon Pointe adjacent to the Hyatt Resort – “Hyatt Pinon Pointe” in the center of Sedona. This event is free to the public. Check in at the info booth next to Sound Bites Grill and Starbucks and get your tasting cards and a map of the stores. Wander through the mall to sample gourmet chocolates and wine.

Scrumptious chocolates are being provided by and/or donated by many local businesses including Lulus Chocolate, Sedona Fudge Company, Whole Foods and Wildflower Bread Company. Southern Wine and Spirits will be doing wine tasting in Sound Bites Grill and the Art of Wine will be featuring unique wines (small fee may apply).

The participating stores will have a red heart balloon identifying the stores that are offering the sweets and tastings. Many of the stores will be having great sales as well. The plaza offers stores, galleries, restaurants, and three open courtyards for viewing Sedona’s spectacular red rocks! Every year the Sedona International Film Festival get bigger and better! This year the festival is celebrating 21 years and they are kicking it off in a big way with a very special performance! On February 20th at 7:00 pm, twelve musicians and singers including Larry Dunn will take center stage at the Sedona Performing Arts Center. Yes you heard me right, the former keyboard mastermind for the ever popular Earth Wind & Fire has brought together some of the world’s greatest musical talents to recreate the Larry Dunn Anthology of Earth Wind & Fire! Not that is a concert you don’t want to miss!

Dunn’s unique rhythmic style, combined with artistic composing and arranging talent, meld into a legendary performance with music’s greatest talents. The set list includes favorite and memorable hits and maybe something we have not yet heard. Larry Dunn’s distinctive groove, funky sync and tight polish will be featured as the special opening act of the Festival.
