OpenStudios.Savethe Date Celebration of the Arts and Artists in the Verde ValleyThe Beauty of Spring has arrived and along with the blooming cacti, the artists of the Verde Valley are getting ready to open their studio doors for the public during the 11th Annual Open Studios Tour taking place April 25th – 27th, 2014.

This annual celebration of the arts and artists is hosted by the Sedona Visual Artist Coalition (SVAC) and includes Sedona, Cornville and Cottonwood. During this free self-guided tour you will have a chance to visit and talk with artists in their workplace, ask questions about their work, the mediums they have chosen and get to know the artists. Don’t be shy, these artists are happy to welcome you into their studios and discuss their work! You can take the self-guided tour daily from 10:00am – 5:00pm.

With over 30 studios participating you will come across a variety of mediums: Photography, jewelry, glass and sculpture, painting and many more! Some of the artist participating in this event are Shirley Eichten Albrecht (Basket Weaver & Mixed Media), Patti Childers (Pastel Painter & Stained Glass), Mukto Logue (Colored Pencil) and Csaba Martonyi (Photographer & Wood Sculptor). Natural Fibers Workshop with Roy Julian

Red Rock State Park1 Busy Weekend at Red Rock State Park and Fort VerdeLearn how native people used a wide variety of natural fibers to literally “tie their world” together. Participants will look at how banana yucca, dogbane, agave, cliffrose, and other fibers native to the Verde Valley were used in ancient times to make rope, string, nets, sandals, clothing, snares, tie shelter together and many other things.This will be a hands-on class where participants will have the opportunity to learn how to make reverse-wrap cordage, braid, and perhaps other useful ties, time permitting. All materials for the class will be provided. There is a $15.00 fee required prior to this workshop; space is limited so please call ahead to reserve your spot (928) 282-6907. Guided Sedona Geology Hike

Red Rock State Park Busy Weekend at Red Rock State Park and Fort VerdeRed Rock State Park is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind the picturesque features of Sedona. Join Red Rock State Park’s knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on our trails and discuss how Sedona transformed into what we see today. This is an interpretive experience for both the beginner and experienced hiker, lasting between 2-2 ½ hours and an elevation gain of 250 feet. Please bring water and wear suitable footwear. Moonlight hike Guided Moonlight Hikes Return to Sedona, Arizona!We are all excited, Red Rock State Park in Sedona, Arizona has announced the return of their Guided Moonlight Hikes for the 2014 season! Get out your calenders, put a big circle around April 15th and make your reservations for this hike as soon as possible. Sedona during the day is beautiful, Sedona by moonlight is Awesome!

This 2 1/2 hour naturalist-led interpretive moonlight hike is by far the most popular hike offered by Red Rock State Park. Enjoy the cooler temperatures of evening as you enjoy the sunset and moonrise from an overlook and return by the light of the moon. You will also have the chance to learn a great deal about Sedona and its surrounding areas. Information about Verde Valley and park history, as well as archeology, geology, botany, and the riparian wildlife area is offered.

When we tell you that this is one of the most popular guided Sedona hikes, we are not kidding. Space is limited and reservations prior to this event are required; call (928) 282- 6907 to reserve your space. A $5.00 reservation fee is required as well as an entry fees upon arrival ($5.00 per adult (14 and up) $3.00 per youth (7-13), and free for children (0-6)).

Rangers ask hikers to please arrive approximately 30 minutes before the starting time to insure participation. Program fees are nonrefundable unless the park must cancel the hike after your arrival. Wear suitable clothing and shoes (prepare for cool nights) and bring water, a flashlight and insect spray. Come experience the first river race of the season while enjoying the Verde Valley’s attractions and activities.The race start is on Route 260, at White Bridge Park, just east of Camp Verde. The end of the race is at Beasley Flats, a US Forest Service Recreation Area approximately 10 miles downriver from the start. The river difficulty is class I-II (III at high water). VBarB Family Fun Event  V Bar V Archaeology Discovery DaysIt is going to be another great weekend in Sedona, Arizona and the Verde Valley! Along with great hiking weather, you also have the opportunity to join in the celebration of Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month with the V Bar V Archaeology Discovery Days, being hosted by the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest . This special event begins on Saturday, March 22nd, 2014 with the last day of activities on Sunday the 23rd.

This event is perfect for family fun and adventure with special activities for kids including making clay pinch pots and making pictographs! The popular Yavapai-Apache Nation Bird Dancers and Gourd Singers will be present, and in honor of the spring equinox, Ken Zoll will be at the V Bar V Heritage petroglyph site to present his talk about the solar calendar. Fun thing to do, see, taste and participate in at the V Bar V Archaeology Discovery Days

  • bird singers Family Fun Event  V Bar V Archaeology Discovery DaysEvents takes place from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm Saturday and Sunday
  • The Yavapai-Apache Nation Bird Dancers and Gourd Singers will be sharing their artistry during this special event
  • On Saturday Ken Zoll will be at the V Bar V Heritage site petroglyph site from 12:00 pm -3:00 pm. He will begin his talk about the solar calendar at 1:00 pm in honor of the spring equinox.
  • Taste traditional foods including Hopi piki bread and parched corn
  • Kids’ activities will include making clay pinch pots, making pictographs and grinding corn on a metate
  • Throwing “darts” at the atlatl course
  • Enjoy watching pottery making & firing
  • Watch flint-knapping demonstrations
  • Learn about spinning and weaving cotton
  • Watch how to make fire by friction
  • Learn about yucca fiber sandals & rope
  • Talk to Mountain Men and learn about the history of ranching in the Verde Valley
  • Learn about the history of V Bar V Ranch
  • View over 1,000 beautiful petroglyphs
