Tuz Star Party at Tuzigoot National MonumentIf you are going to be visiting Sedona, Arizona and the Verde Valley this weekend, don’t miss your opportunity to attend a very special event at Tuzigoot National Monument! On Saturday, April 18th the Astronomers of the Verde Valley and Tuzigoot National Monument, located about 30 minutes from the Inn of Sedona in Clarkdale, AZ, will be hosting a “Star Party”!

Visitors can learn about the cosmos, explore the night sky through high powered telescopes, and enjoy the brilliant stars in the dark desert skies. Nights are still chilly; please wear warm clothes. They recommend that you bring a flashlight that has a red filter to make it easier for your eyes to adjust to the dark. Also, places to sit are very limited at the monument, so if you plan on staying a while, bring a collapsible chair. It will be very dark, open toed shoes are not recommended. Can you guess what it is? If you guessed the Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Tlaquepaque, you are right! On Saturday, May 2nd, the charming plazas, patios, and streets of Tlaquepaque will be dressed in a festive wash of color, music, and dancing in the spirit of old Mexico. Enjoy the festivities while cheering and whistling to the music of mariachi musicians, clapping to the steps of folklórico dancers and savoring the mouth-watering tastes of traditional Mexican foods at Tlaquepaque’s famed El Rincon Restaurante.

The Great Sedona Chili Cook-Off twill also be taking place in the village during the celebrations. Tasting is from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm in the Calle Independencia. Tickets for tastings are just $5 for kids and $15 for adults. Organized by the Rotary Club of Sedona, proceeds will benefit Polio-Plus-Rotary International’s project to eradicate polio worldwide. Winners will be selected for the People’s Choice Award and the Judge’s Award for best flavor, consistency, aroma, and appearance. There will also be a Beer Garden sponsored by Oak Creek Brewery & Grill.

Below you will find the 4 festivals scheduled for this year; I personally have attended all of these festivals every year and have truly enjoyed the environment and activities and have learned something new every time.

25th Annual Zuni Festival of Arts and Culture
May 23rd – 24h, 2015 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm)
Zuni Festival 2015 Heritage Festivals at the Museum of Northern ArizonaThe A:shiwi or Zuni people, share Zuni language, lifeways, traditional music, and dances. Artists, performers and educators travel from Zuni, New Mexico, an integral part of the cultural landscape of the Colorado Plateau, to share their art and culture. Enjoy the Nawetsa Family Dancers who perform traditional Zuni dances, and music from the Zuni Pueblo Band. Learn about the importance of art and cultural place-names in the perpetuation of traditional identity. Meet and buy directly from Zuni artists and demonstrators. This event is created in partnership with the A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center in Zuni, New Mexico.

82nd Annual Hopi Festival of Arts and Culture
July 4th – 5th, 2015 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm)
Hopi Festival 2015 Heritage Festivals at the Museum of Northern ArizonaThe oldest Hopi show in the world and a Fourth of July tradition since the 1930s, award-winning Hopi artists from the twelve Hopi villages bring the mesas to Flagstaff during this annual event. The unique work of carvers, painters, jewelers, potters, quilters, and basket and textile weavers fill the more than 65 artists’ booths. Enjoy cultural presentations, storytelling, music, and dances that fill the Museum grounds during Fourth of July weekend. Taste Hopi bread and piki baked outside in ovens. Watch Hopi pottery being shaped, painted, and traditionally fired. Walk the Museum’s Rio de Flag Nature Trail with a Hopi medicine woman. Learn about Hopi clans and clan migration, and how the tribe is working to preserve language and agricultural traditions.

Learn from cultural experts about customs and practices families are using to keep traditions strong. Explore the tribe’s intricate language with a Navajo linguist, and come to understand many ancient legends and traditions. Hike with a Navajo ethnobotanist and learn the Diné uses of local plant life.

12th Annual Celebraciones de la Gente :: A Lively Celebration of the Day of the Dead

Celebraciones de la Gente 2015 Heritage Festivals at the Museum of Northern ArizonaThe Museum comes to life for Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, an ancient Mesoamerican holiday held throughout Mexico, Latin America, and the Southwest. More than a dozen Flagstaff families create ofrendas (altars) to display in the Museum’s courtyard. Learn about Day of the Dead traditions and the role of Hispanics in northern Arizona’s history. Enjoy mariachi music, arts, and storytelling. Learn about migration and the blending of cultural traditions. A celebration of all people of Latino and Hispanic origin, this festival is a colorful and vibrant expression of community. It is created in partnership with Nuestras Raices, an organization of Flagstaff Hispanic pioneers.

This event will take place April 17th and 18th, the Rowe Fine Art Gallery is located under the bell tower in Patio de las Campanas in the beautiful Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.

More about Artist Kim Diment
Kim’s subject matter includes the animals she observes in her own backyard as well as wildlife native to the Southwest and Africa, where she has traveled extensively.

“I love animals, and I love to tell everyone about the animals I paint,” she says. “All of my paintings are inspired by personal experiences, and I enjoy sharing those experiences with art collectors. I am fortunate to have so much wildlife around me. I can see it as I’m painting from my studio, which can be quite distracting!”

The past year has been an exciting one for Kim. She received her third award of excellence from the Society of Animal Artists in 2014, and her painting, “Ramblin’ Gamblers,” featuring Gambel’s quail, placed second in the Richeson 75 Art Competition in the animals, birds and wildlife category. (The painting is exhibited at Rowe Gallery.) Kim will bring several new paintings featuring hummingbirds, javelina and a horned toed lizard to Sedona for this exciting show. Kim is represented exclusively in Arizona by Rowe Gallery.

Join Red Rock State Park’s knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on their trails and discuss how Sedona transformed into what we see today. Red Rock State Park is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind the picturesque features of Sedona. This is an interpretive experience for both the beginner and experienced hiker, lasting between 2-2 ½ hours and an elevation gain of 250 feet. if you are interested in taking this popular Sedona, Arizona hike make sure to contact the park about schedule changes or reservations. The Festival is actually a handful of events rolled into one: Camp Verde Pecan & Wine Festival, Verde Valley Archaeology Fair, Verde River Runoff canoe and kayak race, and a host of activities surrounding Arizona State Parks Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month. Admission to all events is free. Charges will apply for wine tasting and race participants. AFairLogo.gif 3 A Weekend of Family Fun in Camp Verde, AZThe Verde Valley Archaeology Fair and International Archaeology Film Festival are held during Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month on the last weekend in March. Enjoy two exciting days of archaeological adventures, and take a trip back in time to explore the past through hands-on activities and presentations.

Experience the excitement of archaeology with dozens of hands-on activities, live presentations, and special programs. The Fair includes the annual American Indian Art Show with artists from Hopi, Navajoland, Zuni and several New Mexico pueblo communities. Artists will demonstrate their medium and have their work available for sale. The Art Show is in the Community Center with the archaeology exhibits.

The 2015 International Archaeology Film Festival will have film showings March 27th and 28th at 7:00 pm at the Phillip England Center for the Performing Arts, 210 Camp Lincoln Road, Camp Verde.
