Lanning Gallery
“Experience of Nature: The Art of Judith Monroe”
July 1st – July 10th, 2016
Opening Reception July 1st (5:00 pm – 8:00 pm)
Judith-Monroe-JDM30-Evening-Glow-(CathedralRock)Lanning Gallery in Sedona, Arizona opens a new exhibition to showcase the unique techniques of artist Judith Monroe as she creates mixed media landscapes that literally bring nature onto her canvas. Judith Monroe worked as a photographer then a graphic artist before taking a couple of years off to have her children. But the distance from her artistic energy finally, in no uncertain terms, called her back. Monroe returned to the darkroom and, feeling that color films weren’t conveying what she felt and remembered from each scene of nature she strove to present, she began hand-coloring her photos, capturing the feelings of each place and the emotions she had felt there. The traditional hand-coloring process led Judith Monroe to add visual layers to her photographs right in the darkroom with photograms (placing objects directly onto the surface of photographic paper then exposing it to light), she began mixing media onto the photographs using watercolors and pencils. This led to her current technique of coating a black and white print with an acrylic medium which, as it dries, pulls the ink out of the paper. The images on this transparent film are now the base of her mixed media paintings. For more information please visit the Lanning Gallery.

Beat the Heat at Slide Rock State Park

Sedona, AZ: Slide Rock State Park

The Perfect Spot to Cool Off in the Red Rocks!

Slide Rock State ParkWhen you are looking for a day of family fun and a break from the Arizona heat during your Sedona summer vacation, Slide Rock State Park is the place for you! Slide Rock State Park, originally the Pendley Homestead, is a 43-acre historic apple farm located in the beautiful Oak Creek Canyon. Visitors to the park can slide down a slick natural water chute or wade and sun along the creek. They also have fifteen open air picnic tables, making it a perfect spot for a summer family fun day! It is important to remember that your picnic should be packed with the knowledge that charcoal fires are permitted in designated grills only. No wood fires allowed in grills. Propane grills and stoves are allowed, so cold cuts and salad would be a great way to go.

Slide Rock State Park also offers hiking trails. These are short trails that include a nature trail. Our favorite trail happens to be the Pendely Homestead Trail an easy 0.25 mile paved trail. This trail will take you through part of the historic Pendley Homestead and features some of the original apple orchards, Pendley Homestead house, tourist cabins, apple packing barn, various farming implements that were used historically in the homestead, a new orchard of semi-dwarf apple trees, and spectacular views of the canyon walls of Oak Creek Canyon. Most of the ancient features found in the park are from the Sinagua culture dating about 1100 to 1425 AD. Come and hear the fascinating story of the pre-Columbian people who lived and traveled in the park! The hike will identify the various archaeological features and interpret them into the wider context of important regional Sinagua sites. Explore ideas of other cultures that may likely have made use of the park’s resources. The hike will last about two hours, with an elevation gain of some 250 feet, along easy trails. Please bring water and wear suitable footwear. For more information please visit Red Rock State Park.

Verde Canyon Starlight Train Tours

Starlight Tours at the Verde Canyon Railroad

2016 Tour Dates: June 18th, July 16th, August 20th and September 17th

Starlight Tours

All Aboard! The Verde Canyon Railroad has announced the return of their very popular Starlight Tours! The first tour of the season will take place this weekend on June 18th!

Many of the people that visit Northern Arizona make sure to take the scenic, relaxing journey into the Verde Canyon aboard the fully-restored vintage train that calls the canyon home. During the summer time the Verde Canyon Railroad offers you the chance to see the canyon in a whole new light with their very popular Starlight Tours. The Starlight tour offers you a totally different perspective of the Verde Canyon. As it rumbles through the Canyon, the low slant of sun bathes the high cliffs in soft golden hues and the wildlife that call the canyon home begin to stir as the cooler temperatures of the evening approach. I highly suggest visiting the open air cars often during the night journey into the canyon, especially when the train reaches its turn-around point at Perkinsville. The sun is usually setting around this time lighting the sky with a brilliant pallet of colors. On the ride back to the station enjoy the canvas of stars that blanket the canyon. The Starlight train departs the depot at 5:30 pm

For more information or to purchase passage aboard the Starlight tours please visit the Verde Canyon Railroad. The Starlight Tours will take place on – June 18th, July 16th, August 20th and September 17th! The Verde Canyon Railroad is located in Clarkdale, Arizona, only a 25 minute drive from Sedona,. Other than Saturday Starlight Tours, the train departs at 1:00 pm. and return at 5:00 pm. Reservations are accepted at 800.582.7245 or online at Verde Canyon Railroad.
