If you are going to be visiting Sedona, Arizona this weekend and love history there are two very cool events you might want to consider attending. Both “History of the Soldier” at Fort Verde State Historic Park and the Sunday Lecture Series “The Biogeography of Oak Creek and the Verde River Basin: A Bridge Through Space and Time” at Red Rock State Park  take place this coming weekend.

“History of the Soldier” – Official AZ Centennial Event
April 14th & 15th, 2012
Pay tribute to our soldiers from the revolutionary war to the present. Fort Verde State Historic Park is proud to present the “History of the Soldier”. This annual event offers visitors a living history timeline of military and civilian encampments from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Activities include flag raising ceremonies, military demonstrations, a fashion show, games for children and an 1870s-era baseball game. The Flag Raising Ceremony will take place both days at 9:00 am, and Arizona State Historian Marshall Trimble will present “Frontier Military Life” at 11:00 am on Saturday.For more information on this event please visit the Fort Verde State Historic Park.

Red Rock State Park 2:00pm (Park Theatre)
“Biogeography of Oak Creek and the Verde River Basin: A Bridge Through Space and Time”
April 15th, 2012
Red Rock State Park will present Dr. Larry Stevens during their Sunday Lecture Series in April. Dr. Stevens will address The Biogeography of Oak Creek and the Verde River Basin: A Bridge Through Space and Time in the Park Theatre. Dr. Larry Stevens, Curator of Ecology and Conservation at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, will be presenting a broad-based program to discuss canyons and rivers as long-term corridors through landscapes, specifically connectivity of Oak Creek to the Colorado Plateau, the Verde River, the San Pedro River Basin, and the Mexican / neotropical realm. The program is free of charge with a $10.00 per vehicle entry to the Park. Seating is limited in the theatre for the lecture series, so reservations are necessary to assure that you have a space.
