Have fun this Labor Day Weekend at Red Rock State Park

While you are visiting Sedona, Arizona over Labor Day weekend make sure to check out all the activities at Red Rock State Park.There will be a very special guided “Moonlight Hike”, Guided Bird Walk and Nature Walk and  the Sunday Lecture Series: Honeybees.

Guided Moonlight Hike 08/31/12
Red Rock State Park’s very popular Moonlight Hike includes a naturalist-led interpretive hike on the park’s beautiful trails. Enjoy the sunset and moonrise from an overlook and return by the light of the moon. The hike lasts for approximately 2 to 2-2½ hours, has an elevation climb of 200-250 feet and covers 2 miles. Dress comfortably, wear appropriate hiking shoes, and bring water, a flashlight and insect spray. The Park recommends that you come through the gate approximately 30 minutes before the starting time to ensure your participation. No late arrivals will be allowed to join the hike. Reservations are required. A $5.00 per person program fee will be charged at the time of the reservation. There is also a $10.00 entrance fee to the Park for a car of four adults. Guided Nature Walk – Everyday (10:00 am – 12:00 pm)
Red Rock State Park gives you the opportunity to join a naturalist and go on a guided nature walk where you will learn more about the riparian ecosystem of Oak Creek and other aspects of the Park. Plants, wildlife, geology, history and archaeology are some of the subjects that may be discussed. Please feel free to ask questions, all the guides at the park go out of their way to answer questions and love for you to be involved in the conversation. The walk last one and a half to two hours.

Guided Bird Walk – 09/01/12 (8:00 am)
Meet up with other bird lovers at the visitors center and enjoy a leisurely stroll through one of the most popular parks in Northern Arizona . Bird enthusiasts can join a naturalist for a “Guided Bird Walk”. Beginners as well as advanced birders are welcome. Rangers recommend that visitors bring their own binoculars. A limited number are available for loan from the Park.

Sunday Lecture Series: Honeybees – 09/02/12 (2:00 pm)
Patrick Pynes will present a program on Honeybees. Dr. Pynes’ one-hour lecture will be divided into two equal parts. Part One is a Power Point presentation describing the life giving relationships that begin with honeybees. These include the relationships between honeybees and flowering plants, and between the queen, workers, and drones. Pynes will also discuss the four major substances of the hive: honey, wax, propolis, and royal jelly. Focused more on backyard beekeeping, colony collapse disorder, and other contemporary issues, Part Two will be a question and answer discussion. Seating is limited, so attendees need to call 928-282-6907 to make reservations to assure themselves a seat during the program.
