Explore Ancient Wonders of Sedona Tour

March 16, 2013

In honor of Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Month Goldenstein Gallery, Keep Sedona Beautiful, Pink Jeep Tours and Susie Reed Photos present the second annual “Explore Ancient Wonders of Sedona” Tour on March 16th, 2013 from 1:00 pm – 5:00pm!

This event is a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the ancients and learn about some Sedona archaeological treasures from knowledgeable experts. Included in this package is a presentation by renowned Southwest rock art photographer Susie Reed at Keep Sedona Beautiful followed by a picturesque, specially customized, fully guided tour to the Honanki Heritage Site, offered exclusively by Pink Jeep Tours.

This colorful afternoon will begin at Keep Sedona Beautiful where Susie Reed will share fascinating insights about rock art, archaeology and sacred sites she’s been photographing and studying in the Sedona area for more than 18 years. Her depth of experience gives her some unique perspectives and an intimate knowledge of her subjects. While following her passion she’s learned from Native Americans, archaeologists, Forest Service workers, shaman and others. She’ll recount some of her amazing adventures, which have included documenting solar and lunar markers at archaeoastronomy sites. She’ll talk about how and why rock art may have been made, its possible interpretations, the importance of protecting sites and more.

Reed is an eminent rock art photographer whose pictures are enjoyed by collectors in many countries. Through her photos, wisdom and tours she sheds light upon the meaning, beauty, magic and value of ancient sites and rock art. She’s well known for adeptly restoring pictographs and petroglyphs in her photos by skillfully using modern technology and her innate sensitivity and affinity for her subject. She considers herself a collaborator with artists whose creations she renders. Some of her original photographs will be on hand for people to see courtesy of Goldenstein Gallery where Reed has been showing since 2009.

Following her presentation Susie Reed will join participants on a specially customized Pink Jeep tour to the Honanki Heritage Site. Their professional tour guide will talk about the area’s flora, fauna and geology as well as the history of the Sinaguan who inhabited Honanki. Pink Jeep’s full-time site host, who’s there to help protect and maintain this one of a kind dwelling, will greet everyone. What’s found on their tour and in Reed’s captivating photos and words are special glimpses of Sedona’s Native American heritage, which evoke a wonderful sense of timelessness, respect and connection to the past.

Susie Reed’s work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries including the De Young Museum, the Cooper Hewitt Museum and the International Museum of Photography. She shows in Sedona at Goldenstein Gallery, which was voted the city’s top gallery for the last five years.

The role Reed’s photos and research play in documenting Sedona’s archeology is important to the preservation and historical records of the area. Her pictures are in the Coconino National Forest archives and several Sedona Visitor and Information Centers thanks to a grant from the Sedona Arts and Culture Commission. Archaeologists use her photos to study rock art and collectors in many countries enjoy her fascinating, critically acclaimed pictures. Susie Reed offers private photo, rock art and ancient site tours in Sedona and beyond and she teaches photography privately, for various groups, schools, camera clubs and online. She’s judged numerous photo competitions and has taught and spoken at California College of the Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, Sedona Arts Center, Sedona Photofest and elsewhere. She was recently nominated for a Sedona Mayor’s Arts Award.
