Usually we center our “Good Eats” posts around a favorite local restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious meal at a good price, but last Friday I finally had the opportunity to check out the Sedona Community Farmer’s Market at the beautiful Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village and decided that some of the best nutritious eats in town can be found there! Okay, so they may not have servers and chefs waiting on you hand and foot but they have some really great vendors who offer wonderful ingredients for you to make you own delicious dishes!

On my visit to the market I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of vendors providing everything from delicious greens to sauces. Of course I have my favorites! Sky Hi Sprouts ranks very high on my list. The sprouts and micro-greens are grown with organic seeds and soil, absolutely yummy! When I stopped by the gentlemen snipped off some sunflower sprouts for me to taste and that is all it took, I was hooked! I ended up buying a huge bag of sprouts and a few other greens. They have been a great addition to my salads, sandwiches and can stand on their own for a quick munch!

I also purchased breads, pasta sauce, salad greens, candles, and some very good hot sauce from some of the other vendors. All of which came in handy for my week with visiting family. The Mamma Letizia’s Spicy Italian Marinara Gravy was a huge hit in my special lasagna and I will be going back for more this Friday!

Whether you live in Sedona or are just visiting, the farmer’s market is a great way to check out the local flavor and grab some fresh produce and breads. Andres was voted as the area’s best comedian in a local readers poll, and named an Arizona Comedy All-Star by Jester’z Improv in Scottsdale. He has performed as a stand up comic or comedic improvisor on stage in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and will offer a short routine for the benefit.

Guests are in for an additional treat, with actor & comedian Jeff Masters who be joining Dennis for a special reunion of their Improv group Divine Improvidence Players. “DIPS” for short are coming together after four years to help support the cause of hunger, healthy living and education success here in their home base of Sedona, Arizona. Do something astronomical this Father’s Day weekend and take a trip up to the Grand Canyon for their 2013 Grand Canyon Star Party! Grand Canyon is one of the best night sky observing sites in the United States because it has some of the darkest skies and cleanest air in the country.

When you are looking for a day of family fun and a break from the Arizona heat during your Sedona summer vacation, Slide Rock State Park is the place for you! Slide Rock State Park, originally the Pendley Homestead, is a 43-acre historic apple farm located in the beautiful Oak Creek Canyon. Visitors to the park can slide down a slick natural water chute or wade and sun along the creek. They also have fifteen open air picnic tables, making it a perfect spot for a summer family fun day! It is important to remember that your picnic should be packed with the knowledge that propane grilles, charcoal and wood fires are prohibited at all times, so cold cuts and salad would be a great way to go.

Slide Rock State Park also offers hiking trails. These are short trails that include a nature trail. Our favorite trail happens to be the Pendely Homestead Trail an easy 0.25 mile paved trail. This trail will take you through part of the historic Pendley Homestead and features some of the original apple orchards, Pendley Homestead house, tourist cabins, apple packing barn, various farming implements that were used historically in the homestead, a new orchard of semi-dwarf apple trees, and spectacular views of the canyon walls of Oak Creek Canyon. Starting May 25, the park hours will be: 8:00 am – 7:00 pm and the Summer Hours & Fee will be in effect ($20 per vehicle, up to 4 adults).

Tips

• Before visiting the park please review these Park Rules.
• During summer months Slide Rock experiences extremely high visitation. The parking lot will typically fill up from late morning through early afternoon. A long wait to enter the park may occur, especially on weekends and holidays. When the park reaches capacity a Parking Lot Full sign will be posted at the park’s point of entry. During times of high visitation access to the park is only available from the southbound turn lane. If and when the southbound turn lane fills and begins to encroach the highway, access to the park will be temporarily unavailable.
• Water Quality Hotline
  Current conditions are available by calling (602) 542-0202 after 9 am the day you intend on coming to the park.
• Pets must be kept on a leash & attended to at all times and Pets are not permitted in the Slide Rock swim area and can not to be left in a vehicle.
• Include sun screen, sunglasses, water(no glass containers permitted), protein snack and a first aid kit in your backpack.
