Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival Featuring Scottish Athletics

2014 Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival

Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival1 Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival Featuring Scottish AthleticsDust off those kilts, and get ready to experience the rich traditions that Celtic folk hold dear at the Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival taking place in Sedona, Arizona on September the 20th, 2014! New to the festival this year – Scottish Heavy Athletics, you heard me right, the Scottish games are coming to Sedona! The festival will take place at the Verde Valley School (see map below) from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Scottish Heavy Athletics are a key part of the Scottish/Celtic festival and are a tradition which dates back more than 150 years in the New World, and to the beginning of recorded history in Scotland. Scottish Athletics are competitions of strength and skillthat involve groups of men and women throwing heavy weights, stones, and poles for distance, or for height. The distance events include two stone throw/put events, two weights thrown for distance, and two hammer throws. Competitors also throw a heavy weight (28 pounds for women, 42 pounds for men’s lightweight masters, and 56 pounds for open men) over a bar similar to one used in pole vaulting. The signature event of the games is the caber toss. Scoring for the carber toss is not dependent on the distance thrown, but on the alignment of the pole after the turn. If you are attending the festival and interested in participating in the games you will need to register by visiting the Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival Website for the registration form.

Celtic tradition always includes good food, music and libation. Enjoy a vast selection of Celtic beer, single malt Scotch, mead and wine. Enjoy the sounds of bagpipes, dance, falconry and more! We attend this festival every year and every year it gets bigger and better! I can’t wait to watch the games and see the beautiful and talented Scottish dancers. So, what are you waiting for? Buy your tickets, register for the games and make your hotel reservations today! To learn more about the festival, register for the games, or to purchase tickets please visit the Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival. You can also visit the Sedona Celtic Harvest Festival on Facebook.

Sedona Entertainment – Jimmie Walker Live in Sedona, Arizona

Jimmie Walker brings his “Dyn-O-Mite” Stand-Up Comedy to Sedona, AZ

Jimmie poster Sedona Entertainment Jimmie Walker Live in Sedona, ArizonaAre you ready for some laughs in the red rocks! There is only one word that can sum up the live comedy show coming to Sedona, Arizona August 22nd – 24th, “DYN-O-MITE”

Award-winning, world-renowned television star and comedian Jimmie Walker brings his “Dyn-O-Mite” stand-up comedy show to Sedona when he performs live on the Goldenstein Stage at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre! I can still remeber watching “Good Times” with my brothers when I was a kid, we would drive our mother crazy struting around the house using J.J’s catch phrase Dyn-O-Mite with all the spunk we could muster! There will be only three performances of Jimmie Walker’s comedy show. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $17 for Film Festival members and students. All tickets include a meet-and-greet with Jimmie Walker in the lobby after the show, how cool is that! Showtimes: 7:00 pm on August 22nd and 23rd and a 2:O0 pm matinee on Sunday, August 24th.

Spotted by the casting director for Norman Lear of “All in the Family” fame, Jimmie accepted a part in Lear’s new urban-styled comedy series, “Good Times.” The role of the broadly strutting, wisecracking J.J. Evans would launch him into television superstardom. “Dyn-o-mite!” was the phrase that made him famous nationwide. As “Good Times” enjoyed a six year run, Walker’s fame grew exponentially. He was the first winner of the NAACP Image Award, and won a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

For more information or to purchase tickets to this Sedona event please visit the Sedona International Film Festival website. If you are a guest of the Best Western PLUS Inn of Sedona we will be happy to drop you off and pick you up from the theatre in our complimentary “About Town” Sedona Shuttle!

American Red Snapper and Watermelon with Chef Christopher Dobrowolski

Schoolhouse Journals August 2014
By Chef Christopher Dobrowolski

Christopher Dobrowolski American Red Snapper and Watermelon with Chef Christopher DobrowolskiWelcome back everyone! Hopefully you are making it through the summer swimmingly! Well seems as if June 2014 was the hottest recorded June in history, not just here in Arizona but in all of the U.S. That brings one thing to my mind that’s for sure…… Want to guess? Too late WATERMELON! Ah yes these giant Easter egg shaped sweet balloons of flavor. Watermelon has been around some time now and originated in South Africa but has been marked as grown by Native American as far back as 1615. Guess what? It’s not really a melon it’s a giant berry…. Now that fact can be argued but the species is truly a berry. I will not bore you with too much history of it I just thought it was interesting that our home state Arizona is the largest producer of this berry and probably my favorites and if you can believe this, China is the largest producer of Watermelon in the world!

Ok now for the other half of the story with a following recipe to combine them together. Since we are known for the freshest fish in the Verde Valley we are going to talk about another one of my favorites that is in season right now.. American Red Snapper usually found and line caught in the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. This fish is truly well rounded with a ton of flavor, medium texture and simple to prepare. Now on to the great part of this story…

The recipe for Fennel Baked Snapper with Watermelon Salsa

  • 2 pounds in 8oz portions red snapper, cleaned
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ Cup blended Olive oil
  • 1 Bulb shaved fresh fennel
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
  1. Combine all ingredients besides fish in a large bowl. Rub the fish thourghtly and let fish marinate for 30 minutes (or overnight in the refrigerator for more intense flavor.)
  2. Pull fish from marinade and strain out oil. Place the fish and leftover goodies in foil squares 12”x12” and seal, but leave a slight opening to allow the steam to escape. Place the fish on a baking sheet and bake until cooked through, about 10 to 15 minutes. Pull from oven or grill and allow to rest.

Watermelon Salsa

  • 1 teaspoons lime zest
  • 1 teaspoon Orange zest
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • ½ teaspoon minced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon turbanado raw sugar
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • 3 cups seeded and finely chopped watermelon
  • 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced
  • 1 mango, peeled and diced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 8 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped

Stir together all ingredients besides watermelon, cucumber, mango, jalapeno, onion and basil. After sugar is dissolved gently toss all the other ingredients. Chill the salsa until fish is ready to serve and spoon generously over.

Well kids that all I have for now; hopefully we will see you soon.

Best regards, Chris Dobrowolski, Schoolhouse Restaurant

Starlight Tour on the Verde Canyon Railroad this Weekend!

Starlight Tours at the Verde Canyon Railroad

vcr Starlight Tour on the Verde Canyon Railroad this Weekend! All Aboard! This Saturday, August the 9th, treat your friends and family to the popular Starlight Tour presented by the Verde Canyon Railroad! Time is running out to enjoy this nighttime ride on the rails, there is only one more tour scheduled for the season!

The Starlight tour offers you a totally different perspective of the Verde Canyon. The train departs the depot at 5:30 pm. As it rumbles through the Canyon, the low slant of sun bathes the high cliffs in soft golden hues and the wildlife that call the canyon home begin to stir as the cooler temperatures of the evening approach. I highly suggest visiting the open air cars often during the night journey into the canyon, especially when the train reaches its turn-around point at Perkinsville. The sun is usually setting around this time lighting the sky with a brilliant pallet of colors. On the ride back to the station enjoy the canvas of stars that blanket the canyon.

The Verde Canyon Railroad offers passengers two unique options for these magical evening rides:

  • The Grape Train Escape
Grape Train Escapes are rolling wine-tasting adventures where select wineries, and wine regions, are highlighted. Delectable appetizers are paired with each wine selection. The August 9th Grape Train Express will feature the “Whimsical Wines of Washington State”. Washington State has proved to be a perfect locale for grapevine cultivation. The wines of the region showcase a fusion of Old World style and with New World sass.
  • Tequila Sunset Limited
Drinking tequila has evolved from south-of-the-border shots to sophisticated and sensual sipping of premium tequilas. During the Tequila Sunset Limited tasting these smooth spirits are paired with delectable cheeses, Ceviche, Margarita cake and infused chocolate-covered peppers.

For more information or to purchase passage aboard the Starlight tours please visit the Verde Canyon Railroad. The Verde Canyon Railroad is located in Clarkdale, Arizona, only a 25 minute drive from Sedona. Other than Saturday Starlight Tours, trains depart at 1:00 pm. and return at 5:00 pm.
