Summer is the perfect time to enjoy early morning hiking, biking, strolling and sightseeing! And definitely great for a sunset stroll in the red rocks. Our featured hike for the weekend is West Fork Trail, for an early morning or evening hike! If you are out and about in the red rocks this weekend, drink plenty of water! Tips for Summer Hiking in Sedona, AZ

West Fork Oak Creek Trail
There are a number of reasons why West Fork is the most popular trail on the Coconino National Forest. You’ll know some of them once you’ve strolled beside the pleasant little stream that ripples along the canyon floor and look up, way up, at the dizzying cliffs that tower above it.  This hike is extremely popular during the fall, but it is also a great hike for an early morning or late evening hike in the summer. There is plenty of shade to help cool you off and the scenery is breath taking! I also highly suggest to bring your camera along.

To access the West Fork Oak Creek Trail drive north 9.5 miles from Sedona to about halfway between milepost 385 and 384. The trail-head is on the west (left) side of the highway. Visit our West Fork Trail photo album.

Beat the Heat at Slide Rock State Park

Sedona, AZ: Slide Rock State Park

Slide Rock State ParkJust in time for summer, Slide Rock State Park has made the Travel Channel’s list of “10 Top Swimming Holes in the United States.” Sedona’s red rocks form the “ultimate water slide.” The channel compiled the list for its new series, “Top Secret Swimming Holes.”

The Perfect Spot to Cool Off in the Red Rocks!

When you are looking for a day of family fun and a break from the Arizona heat during your Sedona summer vacation, Slide Rock State Park is the place for you! Slide Rock State Park, originally the Pendley Homestead, is a 43-acre historic apple farm located in the beautiful Oak Creek Canyon. Visitors to the park can slide down a slick natural water chute or wade and sun along the creek. They also have fifteen open air picnic tables, making it a perfect spot for a summer family fun day! It is important to remember that your picnic should be packed with the knowledge that charcoal fires are permitted in designated grills only. No wood fires allowed in grills. Propane grills and stoves are allowed, so cold cuts and salad would be a great way to go.

Here is a rare look at Slide Rock without a soul in sight by Mike’s Road Trip.

Slide Rock State Park also offers hiking trails. These are short trails that include a nature trail. Our favorite trail happens to be the Pendely Homestead Trail an easy 0.25 mile paved trail. This trail will take you through part of the historic Pendley Homestead and features some of the original apple orchards, Pendley Homestead house, tourist cabins, apple packing barn, various farming implements that were used historically in the homestead, a new orchard of semi-dwarf apple trees, and spectacular views of the canyon walls of Oak Creek Canyon. To learn more about the trails and park please visit Slide Rock State Park.

Tips for Summer Hiking in Sedona, AZ

Best Western Plus Inn of Sedona

Tips for our guests, and their dogs, for Summer Hiking in the red rocks!

It is that time of year again, summer heat is moving into the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona. You will want to make sure to take certain precautions if you go out exploring, especially if you hike with your dog. Even though we are at a higher elevation than Phoenix we still get hot. Afternoon temperatures can get up into the high 90’s and occasional 100s, this is the dessert after all! With that in mind we wanted to share with you some tips we have learned from our own experiences and our guests’ over the years. Please, take our tips seriously, especially about your beloved dogs, they rely on you to keep them safe. And if you are reading this and have some more helpful hints please share them with us so that we can pass them on.

We have also found some great information at www.sedonadogfriendly.com. You will find information on veterinarians, dog friendly restaurants, doggy day care and more! Also check out www.petmd.com!

Tips for Summer hiking in Sedona (Humans and Pets)

  • Avoid hiking during the heat of the day
During the summer months we highly suggest keeping your hikes restricted to the early morning. Remember this great rule of thumb, if you are hiking with your dog place your hand on the trail surface, especially if it is red rocks. If it is hot to the touch, it is too hot for paws! There are protective ‘booties’ available for dogs, if yours is willing to wear them. If they aren’t willing just be aware of the surface you’re walking on, black top especially. One of our favorite early morning hikes is West Fork Trail, it provides a lot of shade and remains very cool. Dogs are permitted on this trail provided they remain on a leash. We also highly suggest getting in contact with the friendly folks at The Hike House. They have a wealth of knowledge about hiking in Sedona.
  • Bring plenty of water
Water is key to hiking anytime of year in Sedona, but it’s critical in the summer months! Dehydration can happen quickly in our high desert climate. Never take a chance, bring plenty of water, and make sure to keep your dog hydrated too! The early morning hikes might seem cool and gentle, but don’t be fooled, make sure you and your pooch DRINK PLENTY OF WATER before, during and after your hike. Always bring extra as we all know sometimes our four legged friends spill as much as they drink! Often dogs will drink from a bottle or your hands, in my case I carry around a bowl that tucks into my hiking bag. Jasper enjoys it more that way and at least I know he is getting more of the water he needs.
  •  Limit your time hiking
All of us that like to explore, love to hike, but you really need to limit your distance and time out on the trail. Remember, if you are hot, your dog is more than likely twice as hot.
  • Being Aware on the Trail
Sedona is beautiful to hike, but you must keep some things in mind during the summer months. Be Aware on the Trail, not only for yourself but for your dog as well. While it is not common, it is possible to see a snake, and if you see it you know your super rocking dog sees it too. Staying on the trail will really slim your chances of seeing one, but stay aware. You know as well as I do, if it is something new to your dog they will want to investigate, another great reason to keep them leashed and under your control. I really don’t think they would enjoy an accidental walk into a cactus!
  • Always let others know where you are hiking
Make sure to always let others know where you will be hiking, friend, family or even a hotel staff member. And make sure to bring a cell phone that is charged.
  • Summer hiking snacks
Along with water I always bring along protein snacks or fruit for a hike. For me I bring nuts, seeds and grapes. For my buddy Jasper I like to bring along his dog food and a few treats. Did you know that they even make backpacks for dogs! I would not want to use one during a summer hike even in the early morning, but if you are out during a cooler time of year it would be a great idea. You will find a lot of helpful information on what to pack when hiking with your dog here www.petmd.com/dog/wellness/evr_dg_hiking_with_your_dog

Above all else, just think before you hike. We hope this helps a little bit and remember please feel free to share your tips, suggestions and ideas.

All Aboard! The Verde Canyon Railroad has announced the return of their very popular Starlight Tours! The first tour of the season will take place on June 10th!

Many of the people that visit Northern Arizona make sure to take the scenic, relaxing journey into the Verde Canyon aboard the fully-restored vintage train that calls the canyon home. During the summer time the Verde Canyon Railroad offers you the chance to see the canyon in a whole new light with their very popular Starlight Tours. The Starlight tour offers you a totally different perspective of the Verde Canyon. As it rumbles through the Canyon, the low slant of sun bathes the high cliffs in soft golden hues and the wildlife that call the canyon home begin to stir as the cooler temperatures of the evening approach. I highly suggest visiting the open air cars often during the night journey into the canyon, especially when the train reaches its turn-around point at Perkinsville. The sun is usually setting around this time lighting the sky with a brilliant pallet of colors. On the ride back to the station enjoy the canvas of stars that blanket the canyon. The Starlight train departs the depot at 5:30 pm

Illuminate Film Festival in Sedona, AZ

Illuminate Film Festival

Now is the time to start planning your trip to Sedona, AZ to attend the 4th Annual Illuminate Film Festival taking place May 31st – June 4th, 2017. Illuminate spans five days and three venues, and will present 26 of the most compelling conscious themed films of the year. There will be evening spotlights, post-screening presentations with directors and producers, Reel Healing immersions, musical performances, a virtual reality showcase, and a Healing Lounge. The Festival opens with the free-to-the-public Launch Party and Outdoor Screening on May 31st at the Collective Sedona and will throw nightly parties for pass-holders every night of the festival.

In addition, the Festival will host a series of film industry programs – the Conscious Film Convergence, the Conscious Cinema Summit and the Conscious Cinema Accelerator – which offer workshops, networking and mentoring for those working to elevate consciousness through filmmaking.

The Festival will present its second annual Conscious Visionary Award to conscious evolution pioneer Barbara Marx Hubbard following the world premiere of American Visionary: The Story of Barbara Marx Hubbard. Another highlight in the lineup is a special program with celebrated filmmaker, author, musician and peace troubadour James Twyman.

New to the festival this year is the Luminary Living Room Series, an offering of intimate workshops with nationally renowned teachers in the mind-body-spirit realm. Teachers include renowned neuroscience and human potential expert Dr. Joe Dispenza, who will share his timeless wisdom in conjunction with a spotlight world premiere of HEAL. This year’s film lineup includes a special focus on spiritual movements and the influential leaders that sparked global awakening and self-realization.
