Verde Valley Archaeology Fair & American Indian Art Show
March 18th – 19th, 2017

Festival-American-Indian-ArtsExperience the excitement of archaeology with dozens of hands-on activities, several films throughout the two days of the show, presentations about the American West and especially Arizona, and special programs. The Fair includes the annual American Indian Art Show with artists from Hopi, Navajo land, Zuni and several New Mexico pueblo communities. Artists will demonstrate their medium and have their work available for sale. The Art Show is in the Community Center with the archaeology exhibits.

The Verde Valley Archaeology Fair and International Archaeology Film Festival are held during Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month in March. their events have been recognized as a “Premier Signature Event” of the Arizona SciTech Festival. Guided Geology Hike

Red Rock State ParkJoin Red Rock State Park’s knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on their trails and discuss how Sedona transformed into what we see today. Red Rock State Park is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind the picturesque features of Sedona. This is an interpretive experience for both the beginner and experienced hiker, lasting between 2-2 ½ hours and an elevation gain of 250 feet. Please bring water and wear suitable footwear. Start the new year with a nature hike led by a volunteer naturalist at Red Rock State Park. Group leaders will touch on subjects ranging from geology, archaeology, botany, wildlife, and park history. Join Red Rock State Park’s knowledgeable volunteers as they venture out on their trails and discuss how Sedona transformed into what we see today. Red Rock State Park is located at the base of the Mogollon Rim, the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Over millions of years of erosion the rim has receded over four miles leaving behind the picturesque features of Sedona. This is an interpretive experience for both the beginner and experienced hiker, lasting between 2-2 ½ hours and an elevation gain of 250 feet. Please bring water and wear suitable footwear. Guided Archaeology Hike at Red Rock State Park

Red Rock State Park has been a destination for Native Americans for several millennium. Most of the ancient features found in the park are from the Sinagua culture dating about 1100 to 1425 AD. Now for the first time, filling a gap in the natural and cultural interpretation programs, an archaeology hike will add this experience for park visitors. Come and hear the fascinating story of the pre-Columbian people who lived and traveled in the park! The hike will identify the various archaeological features and interpret them into the wider context of important regional Sinagua sites. And we will explore ideas of other cultures who may likely have made use of the park’s resources. The hike will last about two hours, with an elevation gain of some 250 feet, along easy trails. We will be taking a short holiday break from our blog this week, but before we sign out for the holidays we wanted to share with you some family fun events and live entertainment taking place this week! From Red Rock Fantasy to a special screening of the Polar Express at Tlaquepaque you will find something for everyone in your family to enjoy!

For all of our guests that will be staying with us over the Christmas holiday we want to make sure you have made your dinner reservations. There will be a limited number of restaurants open for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so we suggest you plan ahead! They can also help you with all your vacation needs from tours to events, to great places to hike.
