V Bar V Archaeology Discovery Days
March 25th – 26th, 2017
One of our favorite events during Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month takes place next weekend at the V Bar V Heritage Site! If you love history, archaeology, ancient technology and petroglyphs the V Bar V Archaeology Discover Days event is for you! This truly is a wonderful event for the entire family, to be able to enjoy hands-on learning experiences, and to have truly knowledgeable, friendly people giving insight into the ancient technologies and ways, is what puts this high on our list of ‘must attend’ events in the Verde Valley!
V Bar V Archaeology Discover Days
Visitors are invited to V Bar V Heritage Site the weekend of March 25th -26th for Archaeology Discovery Days from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm. Discover how the people of the past thrived in this region for thousands of years. Enjoy learning about ancient techniques for spinning and weaving cotton, making bows and arrows, flint knapping and many other interesting tools. Visitors can also try their hand at making “pinch pots” with clay and throwing a dart with an atlatl.
The learning continues with information about plants and animals useful to Native Americans and displays of Mountain Men in their living-history camp. Also, learn about traditional games and farming methods from a Hopi youth group.
Dancers from the Yavapai-Apache Nation will perform at 10:30 am. and 1:00 pm on March 25th at the V Bar V Heritage Site, where one can view over 1,000 petroglyphs at the heritage site and learn about the people who made these markings.
The V Bar V Heritage Site is located 2.8 miles southeast of I-17 exit 298, just past the Beaver Creek Day Use area. A Red Rock Pass is required for parking and will be available at V Bar V for $5 per car, or a Federal Interagency Passes can be displayed. For more information, visit Coconino National Forest or call 928.282-3854.
The V-Bar-V Heritage Site, acquired in 1994 by the Coconino National Forest, is one of the most well preserved and largest petroglyph sites in the Verde Valley. If you are interested in learning more about this Verde Valley treasure please click here.
